Still Life With Drum Machine: Ron Zakrin Solo Exhibition - Friday May, 18th

Detroit’s ever present creative force, artist Ron Zakrin will present his solo exhibition Still Life With Drum Machine at the 323East Gallery in Royal Oak. Free and open to the general public, the opening artist reception begins May 18th from 6 p.m- 11pm.

Ron Zakrin has been a creative force in Detroit for more than 15 years, producing electronic music on Ersatz Audio and Interdimmensional Transmissions imprints under the several monikers including Ghost 200 and Goudron.  Zakrin’s passion like many of the era was fueled by infamous Detroit radio DJ’s aka the Wizard on the The Electrifying Mojo show.

“Like a lot of people my age I got started with Mojo. That’s how it started, hearing all that Kraftwerk, Planet Rock & all that stuff. Later I was making mix tapes, taping Mojo and Jeff Mills as the Wizard that lead to breakdancing. I lived in this housing projects and there were battles every weekend.” Zakrin said

As he became more and more involved in the burgeoning electronic music scene, Zakrin’s artwork began to be influenced by dance music culture and slowly his passion for electronic music and all the accompanying electronic gear slowly crept into the themes and stylistic approach of his paintings.

“ At first I performed live sets with an army of robots that made interesting sounds. The whole aesthetic of these robots and all this gear started making it’s way into my painting. The two bounced back and forth. Music is a soundtrack and there’s no better soundtrack when you’re painting in the studio than listening to Techno. Beats and repetitive sounds influenced the rhythmic nature of your hand moving back and forth on the canvas. I let the techno bleed into my art in subtle ways. Eventually the two became kind of separate, but this show will be the first time that i marry the two in an obvious, more direct way. “ Zakrin said.

As spring turns and summer arrives many metro detroiters see Detroit’s Movement Electronic Music Festival as a passing of the seasons and a coming of age for the international electronic scene.  This exhibition on eve of the festival Ron Zakrin’s solo exhibition Still Life With Drum Machine pays tribute the the past, present and future of the genera that has influenced modern music culture.

Inspiration for this confluence of art is music will be on display at 323East gallery from May 18th - June 15th
